Along Miyagi's Pacific coast to the east, you'll find abundant fishing grounds and picturesque sights, including Matsushima, one of Japan's three most scenic views. Tagajo is a historic city, etched with over 1,300 years of memories. It is recognized as one of Japan's Three Great Historic Sites, alongside the Heijo Palace Site (Nara Prefecture) and the Dazaifu Site (Fukuoka Prefecture), and is home to the Special Historic Site Tagajo Ruins and the National Treasure Tagajo Stele. Popular nature walks here also offer encounters with plants and trees that evoke the spirit of the Manyo period, such as irises (Tagajo City's official flower) and red spider lilies.
