Miyagi Prefecture

Zao Town

This town, situated at the eastern base of the Zao Mountain Range in the southwest of Miyagi Prefecture, is a rich hub of agriculture and tourism, surrounded by grand natural scenery.
Its varied topography supports a wide array of food production. Rice is cultivated in paddies irrigated by the clean waters of the Zao Mountains, while fruit orchards on the hillsides produce the area's famous pears. The highland areas are known for their fresh dairy products and delicious highland vegetables. The town is also home to the Togatta Hot Springs and Zao's iconic crater lake, Okama, which draw many visitors each year as one of Miyagi's premier tourist destinations.

Togatta Onsen

Togatta Onsen is a hot spring town with a history stretching back to the Edo period, where the rising steam creates a deeply atmospheric setting. Tagajo City

Tagajo is a historic city, etched with over 1,300 years of memories. It is recognized as one of Japan's Three Great Historic Sites, alongside the Heijo Palace Site (Nara Prefecture) and the Dazaifu Site (Fukuoka Prefecture), and is home to the Special Historic Site Tagajo Ruins and the National Treasure Tagajo Stele. Popular nature walks here also offer encounters with plants and trees that evoke the spirit of the Manyo period, such as irises (Tagajo City's official flower) and red spider lilies.

Designated a National Special Historic Site, the Tagajo Ruins stand as Tohoku's foremost ancient castle site, where the provincial government office and military headquarters of Mutsu Province were established during the Nara period. The Tohoku History Museum provides an in-depth look at the history and culture of Japan's Tohoku region, from the Jomon period to the present day.
